I’ve always enjoyed DC’s imaginative stories, and while reading again one of my favorite comic book series PLANETARY, I read two stories that involved Superman and Clark Kent. If you would like to read them yourselves before listening to this episode, check out the trade paperbacks, PLANETARY: THE FOURTH MAN and PLANETARY: CROSSING WORLDS. The other Planetary trade paperbacks are PLANETARY: ALL OVER THE WORLD AND OTHER STORIES and PLANETARY: LEAVING THE 20TH CENTURY. Issues 19 – 26 have not been collected, that I-m aware of.

The web site http://k-metal.cc is a web site devoted to this first Jerry Siegel script to be rejected by DC Comics editors. This site includes a history of the script, copies of some of the pages of original lettered and inked art, and a modern recreation of the story in a 1940’s style. There is more information there than can be squeezed into a thirty minute episode, so explore this previously obscure part of Superman history four yourself!

With this episode I get back on track to post an episode for every week of the year, and hope to stay on schedule starting next week.

Joe Shuster’s birthday will be on July 10. He was born in 1914 and died on July 30, 1992. His former partner outlived him by four years. To read more extensively about Jerry and Joe, pick up the book MEN OF TOMORROW: GEEKS,GANGSTERS AND THE BIRTH OF THE COMIC BOOK, and the young readers book, BOYS OF TOMORROW: THE CREATORS OF SUPERMAN, by Marc Tyler Nobleman and illustrated by Ross MacDonald. It is scheduled to be published on July 22, 2008.

After the episode SUPERMAN VS. SUPERMAN, marking the anniversary of the 1986 revamp of the Man of Steel, I thought it would be a good idea to devote an episode of this podcast to the creator of the mini-series MAN OF STEEL, which restarted Superman continuity. Plus, July 6 is John Byrne’s birthday, when I’m recording this episode!

For SUPERMAN comics’ 300th issue, DC Comics decided to publish an Imaginary Story, SUPERMAN 2001!. What if baby Kal-El’s rocket landed on Earth today (back in 1976). As with most imaginary stories, it was a fun issue to read.
