Adam Dechanel, writer for the SUPERMAN HOMEPAGE, is also writer and co-producer of THE JUNGLE BOOK, a play that will be performed at The Lion & The Unicorn Theatre in London, England from December 13, 2013 through January 14, 2014. If you are going to be in Great Britain during this time, and would be interested in attending this play, call 08444-771-000. To learn more about the production go to http://www.thejunglebook.eu/.

Finally, Al Plastino posted a picture of himself on facebook recently, holding his original art for the story, SUPERMAN’S MISSION FOR PRESIDENT KENNEDY. This story was scheduled to be published during the month of November 1963, but was pulled from the publication schedule after his assassination. It would later be published in SUPERMAN 170, which was covered back in Episode 49, December 10, 2008. He had meant for his original art for the story to be donated to the JFK Presidential Library, but recently discovered that it was up for auction. After checking with the JFK Library, which could not find any record that the art had ever been donated to the Library, Mr. Plastino tried to get the art back from Heritage Auction. According to Mr. Plastino, they informed him that he no longer had rights to the art, and would not reveal the identity of the art’s consignor.

A spokesman for Heritage Auction replied to someone’s facebook post, stating that the art had first been sold at a Sothby’s auction in 1993. The consignor Heritage was working with had an excellent track record with them,, and they had no reason to doubt that he had the right to sell the art. The spokesman also explained that the picture showing Mr. Plastino holding the art for the title page was taken at the New York ComiCon. A Heritage employee was talking with Mr. Plastino, and he wanted to look at it, and another Heritage employee took the picture.

If Mr. Plastino is unable to get his art back, let’s hope whoever buys the art will honor his original wishes for the original pages and donate them to the JFK Presidential Library.

I covered his life and career in Episode 157 and blog.

Download Episode #265!

EPISODE NOTE: Because this week is special in Superman history, the regularly scheduled episode will be postponed until next week.

According to the Grand Comic Book Database and other sources, ACTION COMICS No. 1 was published on  April 18, 1938. Mike’s Amazing World Of DC Comics puts the date around May 3, 1938. Since this podcast is currently featuring the silver age adventures of Superman, it seems only natural to feature Superman during the decade of the 1960’s. In this episode I briefly explore what was unique about Superman stories during this decade, as well as the development of the Superman family of characters.

The Silver Age Comics Blog post for March 21, 2009 has some interesting numbers on the popularity of Superman comic book titles during the early 1960’s.

Thanks to Professor Alan for his e-mail about my coverage of MegaCon, as well as Scott Gardner on his Two True Freaks MegaCon episode. Thanks also go to Chuck O’Donnell for his complimentary e-mail. He has written an article about former DC Comics and Superman writer Otto Binder.

Episode #241: Superman Family Comic Books Cover Dated May 1958!

Superman’s Girl Friend Lois Lane #2 & World’s Finest Comics #94!

Download Episode 241!

SUPERMAN’S GIRL FRIEND LOIS LANE 2, May/June 1958, was published around March 13, 1958. It contained 32 pages for the cover price of 10¢. Mort Weisinger was the editor, and the cover was drawn by Al Plastino. All three 8 page stories were reprinted in SHOWCASE PRESENTS: SUPERMAN FAMILY vol. II and SUPERMAN’S GIRL FRIEND LOIS LANE ARCHIVE vol. I.

– SUPERMAN’S SECRET SWEETHEART was drawn by Kurt Schaffenberger. While Mike’s Amazing World Of DC Comics did not list a writer, The Grand Comic Book Database listed the writer as possibly (?) Bill Finger (?).

– LOIS LANE IN HOLLYWOOD was written by Otto Binder and drawn by Kurt Schaffenberger, and was also reprinted in LOIS LANE ANNUAL 2.

– SUPERMAN’S FORBIDDEN ROOM was pencilled by Wayne Boring and inked by Stan Kaye. While Mike’s Amazing World Of DC Comics did not list a writer, The Grand Comic Book Database listed the writer as possibly (?) Jerry Coleman (?).

WORLD’S FINEST COMICS 94, May/June 1958, was published around March 25, 1958. It contained 32 pages for the cover price of a dime. Jack Schiff was the editor, and the cover was pencilled by Curt Swan and inked by Stan Kaye.

– The 12 page Superman/Batman story was THE ORIGIN OF THE SUPERMAN – BATMAN TEAM, written by Edmond Hamilton, pencilled by Dick Sprang and inked by Stan Kaye. I and DC UNIVERSE: SECRET ORIGINS.

This story differs greatly from the first Superman/Batman team up, THE MIGHTIEST TEAM ON EARTH in SUPERMAN 76, which we covered back in Episode 161. Bill Jourdain also covered this story in this episode of his GOLDEN AGE OF COMIC BOOKS PODCAST.

– Tomahawk starred in the 6 page story, THE FRONTIER CENSUS TAKER. Dave Wood might have written this story, but it was definitely drawn by Fred Ray.

– Green Arrow was featured in the 6 page story THE ROCKET RAIDERS, possibly written by Ed Harron but definitely drawn by George Papp.

Elsewhere in DC Comics, 32 titles carried the May or May/June 1958 cover date. NOTE: Beginning next month, we will begin covering the Superman Family of titles which were published the same month as the story we began our look at Superman’s silver age, ACTION COMICS 241. Since we’ve already covered the other DC titles beginning with the cover month of June 1958 in Episode 160, we will not be repeating them on future Superman Family comic book episodes. I will mention which episode the other DC titles were mentioned and provide a link both to the episode, and also the dcindexes.com page which lists that particular month of titles.
