On December 14, 1972, DC published SHAZAM 1, February 1973, their first comic book featuring the old Fawcett Comics character Captain Marvel. While Superman and Captain Marvel never fought in a cross-over story, their two publishers did battle each other in court.

Superman and Captain Marvel first met in a comic book story titled SUPERDUPERMAN! in MAD #4, April/May 1953. To read this story online go to: http://kitscomics.com/captain/34.htm . DC, which now owns MAD MAGAZINE, has reprinted the story in MAD ARCHIVE vol. 1, which collected issues 1 – 6.

DC has also reprinted the early issues of SHAZAM, which ended with issue 35 in 1978, in SHAZAM: THE GREATEST STORIES EVER TOLD, and SHOWCASE PRESENTS: SHAZAM! vol. 1.

DC Comics editor Julius Schwartz celebrated his 70th birthday in 1985. For a birthday surprise, writer Elliot S! Maggin proposed a surprise birthday issue of SUPERMAN, starring Julius Schwartz, to DC executive Paul Levitz. Maggin and artist Curt Swan created the story in advance so that it could be inserted into the production schedule in place of the middle issue of a Lex Luthor trilogy Schwartz was working on. That story would appear in the next issue, 412. The staff was able to pull off the surprise, with a few close calls. The issue appeared on June 13, 1985, with the cover date of September 1985. The story, THE LAST EARTH PRIME STORY, was written by Elliot S! Maggin, pencilled by Curt Swan, inked by Murphy Anderson, lettered by John Costanza and colored by Gene D’Angelo, with the tag: aided and abetted by Dick Giordano, Paul Levitz, Bob Rozakis.

Julius Schwartz described the story in his autobiography MAN OF TWO WORLDS: MY LIFE IN SCIENCE FICTION AND COMICS, written with Brian M. Thomsen and published by Harper Entertainment in 2000. The book may not be in print any more, so check your local library, used book store or internet vendor.

Marv Wolfman was born on May 13, 1946, which in 2009 makes him 63 years old. Many happy returns of the day, Marv! He is best known for several titles, TOMB OF DRACULA, with the great penciller Gene Colan, for Marvel, and THE NEW TEEN TITANS and CRISIS ON INFINITE EARTHS for DC. This episode features his comic book career, although he has also worked in TV and animation.

The featured Marv Wolfman Superman story is IF SUPERMAN DIDN’T EXIST, drawn by Gil Kane and published in ACTION COMICS #554, April 1984. It was reprinted in the trade paperback SUPERMAN IN THE EIGHTIES.

Marv created or co-created many comic book characters. For the post-crisis Superman titles he created Cat Grant, Professor Hamilton, the Milton Fine Brainiac and Lex Luthor as corporate mogul.

Curt Swan was born on February 17, 1920. To commemorate the anniversary of his birth, the feature for this episode is the back story of SUPERMAN ANNUAL #9 from 1983, I FLEW WITH SUPERMAN. Curt Swan co-stars with Superman in this story that Curt inked over his own pencils, one of the few stories with which he did so. I could find no reprint information about this story. I will be sharing the entire plot of the story. So if you would like to read this story before listening to this episode, you should be able to find it on line or in the back issue bins of your local comic book store.
