Download Episode 6!

In this episode, I want to take the time to share my enthusiasm about current superman storylines in the various Superman titles. Two monthly Superman titles that are no longer on my pull list are SUPERMAN CONFIDENTIAL and SUPERMAN / BATMAN. I’ve had to drop these to add other titles to my reading list and stay on my budget. My favorite Superman titles, in reverse order are:
3. SUPERMAN
2. ACTION COMICS
1. ALL-STAR SUPERMAN.

I hope everyone enjoyed Valentine’s Day with their loved one. I know I did. I begin this episode with a small correction: NEW GODS issues 12 – 18 and MISTER MIRACLE 19-25 were done by other writers and artists. Jack Kirby was not involved with theses issues. By this point he did not work for DC.

Valentine’s Day episodes will always feature the loves of Superman’s life, and we start this first Valentine’s Day episode with Lois Lane. She has been with Superman and Clark Kent from the beginning in ACTION COMICS #1. She even had her own title: SUPERMAN’S GIRL FRIEND LOIS LANE from 1958 – 1974 for 137 issues. Some key issues in the relationship of Lois and Clark Kent / Superman:
ACTION COMICS #484, June 1978, SUPERMAN TAKES A WIFE (reprinted in SUPERMAN IN THE SEVENTIES
SUPERMAN #50 (second series, 1986- ), Dec. 1990. Clark proposes and Lois accepts.
ACTION COMICS #662, Feb. 1991, SECRETS IN THE NIGHT. Clark reveals his secret identity to Lois.
SUPERMAN: THE WEDDING ALBUM, Dec. 1996.
The first solo Lois Lane story: LOIS LANE: GIRL REPORTER from SUPERMAN #28, May/June 1944, reprinted in SHOWCASE PRESENTS: SUPERMAN FAMILY VOL. I.
The featured artist of this episode is Kurt Schaffenberger, who drew the first 81 issues of SUPERMAN’S GIRL FRIEND LOIS LANE. Lastly I look at the first Lois Lane comic book I can remember reading: SUPERMAN’S GIRL FRIEND LOIS LANE #67, Aug. 1966, LOIS LANE — QUEEN AND SUPERMAN COMMONER!

I also have an update on my son in Marine Corps boot camp, and a little on how I spent my Valentine’s Day.

In this second part of my tribute to Jerry Siegel, I review the other artists who worked on the first stories of Siegel’s other heroes he created for DC Comics. Then I highlight the firsts of Jerry Siegel’s 1960’s Superman stories. He wrote for all of the related Superman characters, including Jimmy Olsen, Lois Lane and The Legion of Super-Heroes, as well as Supergrl. Finally, I highlight one of his first ’60’s Superman stories: SUPERMAN JOINS THE ARMY from SUPERMAN #133. then I share a special tribute story in ACTION COMICS #554, by Marv Wolfman and Gil Kane titled IF SUPERMAN DIDN’T EXIST…

Another sad anniversary in comics occurred this week. Jack Kirby passed away on February 6, 1994, at his home in Thousand Oaks, California. In this episode I will share a brief history of some of his work for DC Comics over the decades, and feature his work during the 1970’s. During this time he created the Fourth World mythology for DC. Other than co-starring Superman in the first issue of his title FOREVER PEOPLE, Kirby’s main work was on Superman was on the title SUPERMAN’S PAL JIMMY OLSEN, from issues 133-148.Expanded show notes can be found at http://supermanfanpodcast.blogspot.com .
