While the three issue Elseworld’s mini-series LAST FAMILY OF KRYPTON still has one issue remaining to be published by DC Comics, I thought I would present this similar story from SUPERMAN 200. It was published under the title SUPER-BROTHER AGAINST SUPER-BROTHER, with the cover date of October 1967, published on August 3, 1967. The editor was Mort Weisinger, and the cover was pencilled by Curt Swan and inked by Stan Kaye. The story was written by Cary Bates, the same writer of the current LAST FAMILY OF KRYPTON. The story art was drawn by Wayne Boring.

At the end of the story the editors dedicated the 200th issue of SUPERMAN to the 100th Anniversary of Canada becoming a United Federation.

Superman 19, November/December 1942!

Download Episode 139!

NOTE: This episode has been revised. After I discovered that only the first 30 seconds of the final edited episode had recorded (how this happened I don’t know) I re-recorded the episode and uploaded it.

The imaginary stories for this episode come from SUPERMAN 19, November / December 1942, published on September 4, 1942. The editor was Whitney Ellsworth. Jack Burnley drew the cover, which portrayed Superman carrying an automobile, without tires on its wheels, with a family aboard, running down the street. That’s road service, Superman style. This issue was reprinted in SUPERMAN ARCHIVES, vol. V.

Three of the issue’s four stories are featured:

CASE OF THE FUNNY PAPER CRIMES was written by Jerry Siegel, pencilled by John Sikela and inked by Ed Dobrotka. This story was also reprinted in SUPERMAN FROM THE THIRTIES TO THE EIGHTIES.

SUPERMAN’S AMAZING ADVENTURE, originally unnamed, but given a title for the Archive, was written by Jerry Siegel and drawn by Leo Nowak. Since I don’t have a copy of the SUPERMAN ARCHIVE, the plot for this story came from MIKE’S AMAZING WORLD OF DC COMICS at http://dcindexes.com.

SUPERMAN, MATINEE IDOL was written by Jerry Siegel, pencilled by Joe Shuster and inked by John Sikela. This story was also reprinted in SUPERMAN FROM THE THIRTIES TO THE EIGHTIES.

THE DEATH OF SUPERMAN originally appeared in SUPERMAN #149, November 1961, published around September 14, 1961, under editor Mort Weisinger. The cover was pencilled by Curt Swan and inked by George Klein, who were the art team for the full issue story. The writer was Superman co-creator Jerry Siegel. (For more about him, listen to Episode #1: MY TOP 10 FAVORITE SUPERMAN STORIES!, and both parts of Episode #3: JERRY SIEGEL’S 1960’S SUPERMAN STORIES!)

If you would like to read this story for yourself before listening to this episode, it was reprinted in THE GREATEST SUPERMAN STORIES EVER TOLD, DC’S GREATEST IMAGINARY STORIES and SHOWCASE PRESENTS: SUPERMAN vol. III.

There were also two other Superman stories titled THE DEATH OF SUPERMAN. Neither of them were labeled as “Imaginary Stories”.

The first was published in ACTION COMICS #225, the first story of the issue. The twelve page story was pencilled by Wayne Boring and inked by Stan Kaye. The writer was unknown.

The second story appeared as the third story of SUPERMAN #118, January 1958, published around November 7, 1957. The writer was unknown and the artist was Al Plastino.

There is no reprint information about either story.
