Episode #225: Superman Family Comic Books Cover Dated September 1957!

Superman’s Pal Jimmy Olsen #23, Showcase #10 & World’s Finest Comics #90!

After highlighting my FREE COMIC BOOK DAY last Saturday, and reviewing the AVENGERS movie I saw on Tuesday, I featured the following issues in this episode:

SUPERMAN’S PAL JIMMY OLSEN 23, September 1957, published around July 16, 1957. It contained 32 pages for the cover price of a dime. Mort Weisinger was the editor, and the cover was pencilled by Curt swan and inked by Ray Burnley. They were the art team for all three 8 page stories, which were all written by Otto Binder. These stories have been reprinted in SHOWCASE PRESENTS: SUPERMAN FAMILY vol. II.

– JIMMY OLSEN’S SUPER PALS

– JIMMY OLSEN, THE BEARDED BOY

– THE ADVENTURES OF PRIVATE OLSEN (featured on the cover)

SHOWCASE 10, September/October 1957, was published around July 18, 1957. It contained 32 pages for the cover price of 10¢. Mort Weisinger was the editor. The cover was pencilled by Wayne Boring and inked by Stan Kaye, the art team for all three 8 page stories. They were reprinted in SHOWCASE PRESENTS: SUPERMAN FAMILY vol. II.

– THE JILTING OF SUPERMAN was written by Otto Binder.

– THE SIGHTLESS LOIS LANE was written by Jerry Coleman.

– THE FORBIDDEN BOX FROM KRYPTON (featured on the cover) was written by Otto Binder.

The first issue of SUPERMAN’S GIRL FRIEND LOIS LANE would premiere with the March/April 1958 issue, published around January 14, 1958.

WORLD’S FINEST COMICS 90, September/October 1957, was published around July 30, 1957. It contained 32 pages for the cover price of a dime, and Jack Schiff was the editor. Curt Swan pencilled the cover, which was inked by Ray Burnley.

– The 12 page Superman/Batman story was titled, THE SUPER-BATWOMAN, written by Edmond Hamilton, pencilled by Dick Sprang and inked by Stan Kaye. This story was reprinted in WORLD’S FINEST ARCHIVES vol. II and SHOWCASE PRESENTS: WORLD’S FINEST vol. I.

The final two 6 page stories starred the following characters:

– Green Arrow in, THE AMAZING ARCHER FROM MARS, drawn by George Papp.

– Tomahawk in, THE RIDDLE OF THE MYSTERY TRACKER, drawn by Fred Ray.

SHOWCASE 9, July/August 1957, was published around May 23, 1957. It contained 32 pages for the cover price of a dime. The editor was Mort Weisinger, and the cover was drawn by Al Plastino. All three stories in this issue were 8 pages long.

– THE GIRL IN SUPERMAN’S PAST, written by Jerry Coleman and drawn by Al Plastino. This story was reprinted in THE GREATEST 1950’S STORIES EVER TOLD, ESSENTIAL SHOWCASE: 1956 – 1959, MILLENNIUM EDITION 56, SUPERMAN IN THE FIFTIES and SHOWCASE PRESENTS: SUPERMAN FAMILY vol. I. (This story was the first appearance of the adult Lana Lang in a silver age story, but she first appeared in THE GIRLS IN SUPERMAN’S LIFE, published in SUPERMAN 78, September/October 1952.)

– THE NEW LOIS LANE, written by Otto Binder, pencilled by Ruben Moriera and inked by Al Plastino. This story has been reprinted in ESSENTIAL SHOWCASE: 1956 – 1959, MILLENNIUM EDITION 56 and SHOWCASE PRESENTS: SUPERMAN FAMILY vol. I.

– MRS. SUPERMAN, written by Otto Binder and drawn by Al Plastino. This story was reprinted in ESSENTIAL SHOWCASE: 1956 – 1959, MILLENNIUM EDITION 56 and SHOWCASE PRESENTS: SUPERMAN FAMILY vol. I.

WORLD’S FINEST COMICS 89, July/ August 1957, was published around May 30, 1957. It contained 32 pages for the cover price of 10¢. Jack Schiff was the editor, and the cover was pencilled by Curt Swan and inked by Stan Kaye.

– The 12 page Superman and Batman story was titled, THE CLUB OF HEROES, written by Edmond Hamilton, pencilled by Dick Sprang and inked by Stan Kaye. This story was reprinted in WORLD’S FINEST ARCHIVE vol. II, BATMAN: THE BLACK CASEBOOK and SHOWCASE PRESENTS: WORLD’S FINEST vol. I.

– THE LEGEND OF THE KEEPER OF THE WINDS (6 pgs.), was drawn by Jim McArdle.

– Green Arrow starred in the 6 page story, THE STRANGE CIRCUS OF MR. SINESTRO, drawn by George Papp.

Elsewhere in DC Comics, 33 titles carried the July or July/August 1957 cover date.

This episode features Lois Lane’s second and final appearance in the title SHOWCASE with issue 10. For a look at her first appearance in SHOWCASE, as well as the first issue of her own title, go to Episode 109.

SHOWCASE 10, September/October 1957, was published around July 18, 1957. The editor for the Lois Lane issues of SHOWCASE was Mort Weisinger. (The various DC editors took turns editing SHOWCASE every few issues.) The cover, as well as the interior art for all three stories was pencilled by Wayne Boring and inked by Stan Kaye. It featured the third story, THE FORBIDDEN BOX FROM KRYPTON. Otto Binder wrote this story as well as the first story of the issue. THE JILTING OF SUPERMAN. Jerry Coleman wrote the second story, THE SIGHTLESS LOIS LANE. All three stories were 8 pages long.

SUPERMAN’S GIRL FRIEND LOIS LANE 1, cover dated March/April 1958, was published around January 14, 1958. But Lois Lane’s first appearance in a silver age comic book as the main character was in SHOWCASE 9, July/August 1957, published around May 23, 1957. It was edited by Superman editor Mort Weisinger. Al Plastino drew the cover. After a brief history of the beginnings of SHOWCASE, the three eight page Lois Lane stories of issue 9 are featured in this episode:
