Download Episode 308 Part III!

SUPERMAN ANNUAL 7, Summer 1963 (released with the DC Comics titles carrying the July 1963 cover date), was published on June 13, 1963. It contained 32 pages for the cover price of 25¢. Mort Weisinger was the editor, and the cover was pencilled by Curt Swan and inked by George Klein. The theme of this annual was to commemorate Superman’s Silver Anniversary, 1938 – 1963, through eight stories from the 1950’s through the early 1960’s.

– THE STORY OF SUPERMAN JR. (12 pgs.), written by Jerry Coleman, pencilled by Wayne Boring and inked by Stan Kaye. This story was originally published in ACTION COMICS 232, September 1957, published around July 30, 1957.

– THE SUPER-SWORD (8 pgs.), was written by Jerry Coleman and drawn by Al Plastino. This story was originally published in SUPERMAN 124, September 1958, published on July 24, 1958. It was originally covered in Episode 172, for the week of March 30, 2011.

– SUPERMAN’S MYSTERY POWER (8 pgs.), was written by Jerry Coleman, pencilled by Wayne Boring and inked by Stan Kaye. This story was originally published in SUPERMAN 125, November 1958, published around September 9, 1958. It was originally covered in Episode 176 for the week of April 27, 2011.
– SUPERMAN IN THE WHITE HOUSE (8 pgs.), was drawn by Al Plastino. The writer was unknown. This story was originally published in SUPERMAN 122, July 1958, published around May 6, 1958. It was originally covered in Episode 162, for the week of January 19, 2011.
– THE SUPER-GORILLA FROM KRYPTON (12 pgs.), was written by Otto Binder, pencilled by Wayne Boring and inked by Stan Kaye. It was originally published in ACTION COMICS 238, March 1958, released around January 30, 1958. This story was also reprinted in SUPER-HEROES BATTLE SUPER-GORILLAS (1976).

– THE PUNISHMENT OF SUPERBOY (8 pgs.), was written by Otto Binder and drawn by Joe Sikela. This story was originally published in SUPERBOY 75, September 1959, released on July 2, 1959.

– THE ORIGIN OF THE SUPERMAN – BATMAN  TEAM (13 pgs.), was written by Jerry Coleman and drawn by George Papp. This story was originally published in ADVENTURE COMICS 275, August 1960, released on June 30, 1960.
– SUPERMAN’S SECRET SWEETHEART (8 pgs.), was drawn by Kurt Schaffenberger. Only the Grand Comic Book Database lists a possible writer, “Bill Finger?”.  This story was originally published in SUPERMAN’S GIRL FRIEND LOIS LANE 2, May/June 1958, released around March 13, 1958. It was originally covered in Episode 241, for the week of October 9, 2012.

Now that MegaCon is over, we’re returning through the time barrier to pick up our journey through the silver age adventures of Superman, and finishing our look at the Superman titles cover dated January 1963.

 SUPERMAN ANNUAL 6, cover dated Winter 1962 – 1963, was published on November 15, 1962 (5 years later this date would be when my sister was born). It contained 80 pages for the cover price of a quarter. The editor was Mort Weisinger, and the cover was pencilled by Curt Swan and inked by George Klein.

 – THE FIRST TWO SUPERMAN (13 pgs.), written by Otto Binder, pencilled by Curt Swan and inked by Ray Burnley. This story was originally published in ADVENTURE COMICS 257, February 1959, released around December 30, 1958. (I mistakenly stated that the cover date was February 1958, and the release date was around December 30, 1957.)

 – THE FIRST SUPERGIRL (10 pgs.), was part I of the 3-part story THE GIRL OF STEEL, originally published in SUPERMAN 123, August 1958, released around June 17, 1958. This story was written by Otto Binder, pencilled by Dick Sprang and inked by Stan Kaye, and was covered in Episode 168 for the week of Wednesday, March 2, 2011..

 – SUPERMAN’S KID BROTHER (8 pgs.), was written by Otto Binder, pencilled by Curt Swan and inked by Ray Burnley, originally published in SUPERMAN’S PAL JIMMY OLSEN 19, March 1957, released around January 15, 1957. This story was covered in Episode 212 for the week of January 4, 2012.

 – THE LEGION OF SUPER-HEROES (11 pgs.), written by Otto Binder and drawn by Al Plastino, originally published in ADVENTURE COMICS 247, April 1958, released around February 27, 1958 (which would be my son’s birthday in 1990).

 – LOIS LANE WEDS ASTOUNDING MAN (9 pgs.), was written by Otto Binder (according to Mike’s Amazing World Of DC Comics), while comics.org credits Jerry Siegel as the writer. Both sources agree on the penciller, Kurt Schaffenberger.

 – THE MYSTERY OF MIGHTY BOY (19 pages), was written by Otto Binder and drawn by George Papp, originally published in SUPERBOY 85, December 1960, released on October 6, 1960.

 – THE SUPERMAN OF THE PAST (9 pgs.), was written by Otto Binder and drawn by Kurt Schaffenberger, originally published in SUPERMAN’S GIRL FRIEND LOIS LANE 19, August 1960, released on June 28, 1960.

SUPERMAN ANNUAL 5, Summer 1962, was published on June 14, 1962. it contained 80 pages for the cover price of 25¢. This issue was released the same month as the DC Comics titles which carried the July 1962 cover date, covered in Episode 280. The editor was Mort Weisinger, and the cover was pencilled by Curt Swan and inked by George Klein.

– SUPERMAN’S OTHER LIFE (25 pgs.), written by Otto Binder, pencilled by Wayne Boring and inked by Stan Kaye. This story was originally published in SUPERMAN 132, October 1959, published on August 6, 1959.

– THE MAN WHO DESTROYED KRYPTON (8 pgs.), originally published in SUPERBOY 67, September 1958, released around July 3, 1958. Mike’s Amazing World Of DC Comics lists the writer as Otto Binder and the artist as Al Plastino. The Grand Comic Book Database lists Bill Finger as the writer and George Papp as the artist.

– THE INVASION OF KRYPTON (8 pgs.), was originally published in SUPERBOY 83, September 1960, published around July 7, 1960. Mike’s Amazing World Of DC Comics credits the writer as Jerry Siegel, while the Grand Comic Book Database lists the writer as Otto Binder. Both websites agree on the artist, George Papp.

– HOW JIMMY OLSEN FIRST MET SUPERMAN (8 pgs.), was written by Otto Binder, pencilled by Curt Swan and inked by Ray Burnley. This story was originally published in SUPERMAN’S PAL JIMMY OLSEN 36, April 1959, released around February 19, 1959, and was covered back in Episode 273.

– THE SUPER MONKEY FROM KRYPTON (9 pgs.), was written by Otto Binder and drawn by George Papp. It was originally published in SUPERBOY 76, October 1959, released around August 20, 1959.

– THE SLEEPING BEAUTY FROM KRYPTON (9 pgs.), written by Bill Finger and drawn by Kurt Schaffenberger. This story was originally published in SUPERMAN 128, April 1959, released around February 5, 1958, and was first covered in Episode 186.

– THE SUPER-TEACHER FROM KRYPTON (12 pgs.), written by Edmond Hamilton and drawn by John Sikela, was originally published in ADVENTURE COMICS 240, September 1957, released around July 25, 1957.

My personal Superman legacy continues this episode with a look at some of the earliest Superman stories that I read. While they all might not literally be the earliest Superman stories I ever read, they are the ones that stand out in my memory of the Man Of Steel’s stories from my childhood. All of them were edited by Mort Weisinger.

– SUPERMAN MEETS ROBIN THE BOY WONDER: ADVENTURE COMICS 253, October 1958, published around August 28, 1958. Written by Dave Wood, and drawn by Al Plastino. This story was reprinted in THE GREATEST TEAM-UP STORIES EVER TOLD and SUPERBOY: THE GREATEST TEAM-UP STORIES EVER TOLD.

– THE ARMY OF LIVING KRYPTONITE MEN from SUPERBOY 86, January 1961, published around November 17, 1960. The writer was Jerry Siegel and the artist George Papp. This story has been reprinted in LEGION OF SUPER-HEROES ARCHIVE vol. I, SUPERMAN VS. LEX LUTHOR and SHOWCASE PRESENTS: LEGION OF SUPER-HEROES vol. I.

– SUPERMAN 181, November 1965, published on September 16, 1965. The art for this issue was pencilled by Curt Swan and inked by George Klein. THE SUPER SCOOPS OF MONA VINE was written by Leo Dorfman and THE SUPERMAN OF 2965 was written by Edmond Hamilton.

– WORLD’S FINEST COMICS 155, February 1966, published on December 9, 1965. EXIT BATMAN, ENTER NIGHTMAN was written by Edmond Hamilton, pencilled by Curt Swan and inked by George Klein. This story was reprinted in SHOWCASE PRESENTS: WORLD’S FINEST vol. III.

– WORLD’S FINEST COMICS 159, August 1966, published on June 9, 1966. THE CAPE AND COWL CROOKS was written by Edmond Hamilton, pencilled by Curt Swan and inked by George Klein. This story has been reprinted in SUPERMAN / BATMAN: THE GREATEST STORIES EVER TOLD and SHOWCASE PRESENTS: WORLD’S FINEST vol. III.

– WORLD’S FINEST COMICS 172, December 1967, published on October 26, 1967. SUPERMAN AND BATMAN – BROTHERS was written by the teen aged Jim Shooter, pencilled by Curt Swan and inked by George Klein.

Our look at the four Supermen who were introduced in the Supermen titles cover dated June 1993 ends with Superboy, who would come to be known as Conner Kent. He was introduced in THE ADVENTURES OF SUPERMAN 501, cover dated late June 1993, Triangle number 15, 1993. All four titles introducing the four “Supermen” were published on the same day, April 27, 1993..

This episode explores his creation as a clone of Superman, and the twists and turns as a superhero through the LAST STAND OF NEW KRYPTON mini-series.
